*Babies welcome in this session*

The Antenatal Pilates program put together by Lydia has a strong focus on core stability, strength and overall fitness and well being. During pregnancy it is a time of significant change for the body and each of the sessions are an excellent way to help your body cope with the changes you’re undergoing and prepare it for the stresses to come.

You can start the program at any point during your pregnancy, most people book several blocks to take them through their pregnancy.

Classes are held in a calming and supportive environment with max 8 participants so individual help and support is on hand if necessary. Qualifying with APPI, leading Pilates and Physiotherapy body and FutureFit Pilates Training, Lydia is qualified to guide you through Pilates exercises in a safe and effective manner to support you mentally and physically before having your baby.

We focus on developing the core; the abdominals, back and pelvic floor muscles and also other areas which weaken and need extra support during pregnancy due to posture change and weight bearing. We focus on the mind and body connection and particularly on breath control, which encourages an easier pregnancy, delivery and recovery. To help maintain good posture and to ease any discomfort, the sessions will also include stretches and exercises to put your body in comfortable and weightless positions supporting your body before and after birth.

Lydia also offers 1:1 programs and private group sessions if you'd prefer a personal training programme, please get in touch to arrange booking and to to check availability.

17:15 - 18:00 - Antenatal Pilates | The Barn | Heath and Reach

*Blocks of 5 sessions are £49

From my experience in teaching antenatal clients I can promise you the sessions will be an excellent way for you to exercise your body throughout your pregnancy, whatever stage you are at, and they will help you to develop strength in weaker areas whilst exercising to a level where you feel comfortable. Most importantly it gives you time to relax, unwind and focus on you as you prepare for the busy and exciting time ahead. Here is a message I received from a past client who fell in love instantly! I am still in touch with her now and she loves being a new mummy.

I was introduced to Lydia Pilates by my mum and although I was unsure whether it was for me, after I went to Lydia's class I felt completely different!! Full of professionalism, a calming voice and very well explained exercises throughout, you know exactly what you need to do and how to do it. After finding out I was pregnant, I discussed options with Lydia and soon started 1:1 classes - which were brilliant!! Lydia listened each week to what my aches and pains were and tailored the session to suit. I felt so much better! Now, having had my baby boy, I am looking forward to getting back to classes after my 6-week check up with the doctor.

*Post natal Barre classes ONLY at present - please see above*

Post natal classes are the perfect way to ease back in to exercise following your pregnancy. With your body having been through many changes over the course of nine months, it is extremely important to approach exercise in a careful and gradual way post-pregnancy to allow for the abdominal muscles to recover effectively.

Two thirds of women will experience a split in their rectus abdominis (the external abdominal muscle – six pack muscle), for some this will return to its original position with no additional effort required. For others, it requires careful progressions through a well-designed exercise programme to bring the sides of the muscles back together. It is important to avoid certain exercises at this stage so that the abdominal separation does not worsen.

Classes will specifically target posture and addressing tummy issues, including exercises specific to post c-section and diastasis recti (abdominal separation). We will strengthen and tone other key areas which have weakened due to posture change from pregnancy such as the glutes and pelvic floor muscles.

After giving birth, looking after a baby requires spending time in lots of static positions. The upper back curves forward when breastfeeding/holding baby and can become very stiff, causing back pain. Standing and walking with the baby on one hip can make this even worse! So specific maintenance stretches will help reduce back pain and release tension and tightness in the body. We will also cover exercises and Pilates techniques to improve posture and alignment of the pelvis and spine.

As a new mum it is so very important to make time to focus on yourself, as well as caring for your baby. Pilates gives your mind another focus allowing you to switch off from the millions of thoughts which occupy it at other times.

Most Mums are able to join my classes after their six week check. Classes are friendly, informal and you are welcome to bring along your baby. We have a childminder in the session who will watch over babies who typically range from six weeks through to just before they begin crawling. There is no need to worry if you think your baby might be disruptive, everyone is in the same boat and it's a really supportive environment to be in! Post natal classes are a great way to meet other local mums and usually the babies enjoy making friends too!

These sessions can be booked in blocks of 6 to be used over a 7 week period. The cost for the block is £51 or if you'd prefer you can pay as you go £10 per session. If you'd like any more info, please let me know!

Lastly, please do pass on the Pilates love to any other new mummies you know!

MIXED ABILITY YOGA (Hatha + Flow + Restore)

Most forms of yoga in the West can be classified as Hatha Yoga. Hatha simply refers to the practice of physical yoga postures.

This is a mixed ability Hatha based class with some optional Vinyasa flow inspired sequencing. ‘Vinyasa’ means put together in a special way.

Hatha yoga practices are designed to align and calm your body, mind, and spirit to bring about a feeling of physical strength and balance. Classes will also use pranayama (breath practice) to bring about a feeling of emotional balance and the meditation and mindfulness element of the class will draw upon your mental and spiritual focus.

This class encourages students to cultivate awareness of their own body to move through postures in the best way their body knows how. You do not have to be flexible to start a yoga practice but flexibility and strength are natural side-effects of practicing yoga.
